Forging and Chasing a Steel Face (full length)
This video was not possible with out the incredible people on Patreon.com/douglaspryor and their generous support! I means so much to be able to put together and share these educational resources and it literally wouldn't happen with out your support! Thank you!
5 years ago I tried sharing how I make one of these 12ga steel faces, I did it with a pretty basic slide show. Its only 7 minutes long and does describe the process:
ua-cam.com/video/toI1grsVwU0/v-deo.html
I always wished I had filmed more of the raising process as it's one of the most important steps.
It relies on mixing hot work over shaping stakes, slow anneals, and cold work working from both sides of the sheet.
So when I had the chance to make a new version of this steel face style I made sure to film as much as the process as I thought was reasonable.
If you follow me on IG then this project might look familiar but those tiny snips and clips won't give the keen observer nearly enough information.
So here is the full length version, I did cut it down to under an hour while leaving in as much as I could to show the full process.

The 2 week saga of forging out these teeth was an intimidating step for me. I had practiced similar shapes on a smaller scale but scaling up is always different and holds it's own surprises. In this condensed version of the video's I released on Patreon last year I show every step from the drawing to rawhide mallet hot work and oh so much planishing. I learned a lot from this step which would f...

Forging these scutes out from the inside felt really stout, the steel felt thick and reliable. It felt like I was forging 14ga in about 85% of the areas I was working. Only once I got toward the edge where it meets the background did it feel a little thinner (maybe 16-18ga, still plenty to work with). Forging the volume for the crocodiles back. A scute is the keratinous sheathe of skin that cov...

Absolutely stunning metal art work and repousee!! Nice job!! What is the grey material you used to be formed into the back of art for support?? A type of machinists wax? I'm not familiar with the total process with steel. . Many years ago my mother did this using copper and she backed her work with a type of fairly rigid clay. I did some of this type of art in school in both Copper and Aluminum. We used clay too. Keeping the metal annealed properly was the key to success! Ohterwise metal failure and fatigue was a problem. A lot of fun, requiring a lot of patience!!

Just came across your channel. Great work and content. Honest suggestions in my opinion would be to cut up the video into parts as the work is great and I think it would build anticipation to see final product. I would also flip your camera to landscape mode as well. Just suggestions and wish you great success in the growth of your channel and your work.
